Especially for cresc…, the Ensemble Modern member Hermann Kretzschmar has developed an arrangement of John Cage’s ›Atlas Eclipticalis‹ as a concert installation. Cage projected the famous atlas of the stars created by the Czech astronomer Antonín Bečvář onto musical staves, thereby transforming the chart of celestial bodies into musical processes. Kretzschmar’s arrangement now transposes Cage’s work into the small spaces of observatories, inspired loosely by Stephen Hawking’s book ›The Universe in a Nutshell‹. To this end, Ensemble Modern has recorded different versions of the resounding astronomic atlas. These are going to be stratified, layered and connected in always new and multiple ways with the help of a sampler, and complemented by live performances by Ensemble Modern musicians. In this manner, this atlas of the stars is created anew in each concert. The microphone mirrors the telescope of the observatories, adding an acoustic projection to their visual ones. An intimate format rendering the night sky audible.
