Patterns, structures, weaves, carpets. Morton Feldman's ›Coptic Light‹ is an impressive orchestral expression of his interest in woven materials. In the concert of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the work, inspired by Coptic textiles, establishes multi-layered relationships, e.g. with the music of the Cuban-born U.S. colleague Tania León, in which »cultural clashes« of diverse traditions intermingle in a vital, vivid way. But also with the British George Benjamin and his fascination with superimpositions in centuries-old manuscripts, whose fragmentary yet complex stratifications resemble organic growth, all interrelated. Furthermore, with the great Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, who describes her cultural roots in the influence of Jewish teachers, her early encounter with German culture and her Russian-Tatar origins, and whose musical oeuvre reflects the 20th century since the Stalin era – the Cold War, Gorbachev’s perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
